  • Air Fryer Samosa
  • Is Air Fryer Samosa Healthy

By the time we’re done, you’re going to be able to make your very own version of Samosa Chaat for your family and friends!

What is Samosa Chaat

So, what is Samosa Chaat? Well, it’s arguably one of the most popular street food among children and adults alike in India. In short, Samosa Chaat is made when samosa is broken into bite-sized pieces and served with masala, chutney, and spices. Even though it’s amazing street food, it can also be made at home. It’s the perfect dish to experiment with because there are so many different sauces and spices to try it with!

With its origin in Uttar Pradesh, there are many different versions of Samosa Chaat, based on region and family traditions. You can make Samosa Chaat as spicy or as tangy or sweet as you’d like! It’s a very versatile dish.

What does chaat mean?

In India, chaat refers to a sweet or savory snack served roadside or from food carts. Though it doesn’t point to just one snack, like pastries or dosa, it’s commonly used with different Indian dishes, like samosa or aloo, in order to differentiate them from a full-blown meal.

Air Fryer Samosa

Since we’ve talked about samosa earlier, you know that it’s a deep-fried pastry typically filled with delicious potatoes, meats, or veggies. However, thanks to modern technology, you can now make samosa without sinking it in oil! If you have an air fryer, you can cook your samosa in there.

This air fryer samosa recipe from Sandhya’s Kitchen only takes about 30 minutes from start to finish. To make her recipe, you’ll need:

  • 2 tsp oil
  • 2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 1/2 cup green peas boiled
  • 1-2 boiled potatoes roughly mashed
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp Chilli Powder
  • 1 tsp Garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 Tbsp Coriander leaves
  • 20 Samosa Patties

You can find more tips and a full recipe with instructions here. This air fryer samosa recipe is a great alternative to the traditional way of making samosa.

Is Air Fryer Samosa Healthy

Speaking of a great alternative, air fryer samosa is a healthier alternative to traditional samosa — mainly for the same reason air-fried foods are healthier than regularly-fried foods — less oil!

Because it’s the air that cooks the samosa, it doesn’t need to be submerged in hot oil, which lessens the calories and fats.

Components of Samosa Chaat

Now that we answered the question of ‘What is Samosa Chaat,’ we can start talking about the most important components of Samosa Chaat. Even though there are different variations of Samosa Chaat, I’m going to tell you about my favorite way to make this popular street food!

To make my infamous Samosa Chaat, you’ll need:

  • 1 packet Sukhi’s Potato and Peas Samosa
  • ¼ cup yellow onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon green cilantro chutney
  • 1-2 teaspoon tamarind chutney (optional)
  • ¼ cup yogurt (beaten to make it smooth)
  • 1-2 tablespoon cilantro (chopped)
  • Chaat Masala (per taste)
  • Sev (crispy chickpea noodles) optional

How to Make Samosa Chaat

Making Samosa Chaat is a relatively easy process! First, you choose any Sukhi’s Samosa that you’d like and keep frozen. For this particular recipe I believe Sukhi’s Potato and Peas Samosas work the best, but other varieties should also work great.

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and remove your Samosas from their tray. Put them on their baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.

From there, arrange Samosas on a serving tray. You can either chop them into smaller pieces or break them with your hands. Drizzle green chutney followed by tamarind chutney and yogurt. Then, sprinkle on your chopped onion, chaat masala, sev, and cilantro to taste. That’s it! Enjoy!
