Green Cilantro Chutney
Want to learn how to make the best green cilantro chutney? We’ve created a super easy green cilantro chutney recipe that takes under 10 minutes to throw together!
Chutney, a spiced condiment or sauce, originated in India. Its texture is similar to pesto or chimichurri and it can be used in a variety of ways.
Chutney can be made from vegetables or fruits and usually contains sugar, vinegar, and various spices, depending on what the recipe calls for. Today, we’re going to walk you through making Green Chutney, also known as “hari chutney.” This chutney got the name probably because of its green color which is “hara” in hindi.
What is green chutney?
In its simplest form, green chutney is a sauce made green by the bunches of cilantro the recipe calls for. Depending on the recipe, mint can also be used to give a green punch of color as well as a different flavor.
While simple spiced chutney originated in India as early as 500 BC, it’s likely that green chutney originated there as well. To make today’s recipe, you’ll need cilantro, serrano chilis, sugar, salt, pureed ginger, pureed garlic, vinegar, lemon juice, and water.
How can I serve green chutney?
Green chutney can be served in many different ways! It goes great on burritos, tacos, sandwiches, or burgers. Basically, anywhere you would normally use a condiment, you can sub in green chutney!
It also makes a great dressing, so you can top salads off with it or even use it as a marinade. If you’re hungry for a quick snack, you can use it as a dip with pita chips or naan.
How to make green chutney?
Perhaps the best part about green chutney, other than the delicious taste, of course, is how incredibly simple it is to make! You take your coarsely chopped cilantro, diced chilis, sugar, salt, pureed ginger and garlic, vinegar, lemon juice, and water and put them into a blender. Then, you blend until smooth. How easy is that?!

Haha… we do not blame you! 😀
Thrilled you enjoyed it.
I just bought 4 boxes of Samosas at Smart and Final. I love them… but the Cilantro Chutney is so good!!!
Isn’t it? I could drink a jar of it 🙂
I love all your products Sukhi and have been buying them since you began selling at farmers markets. Since i see that you are kind enough to answer these comments i thought i would suggest toning down the chicken tikka. I love spicy and chicken tikka but find it just to be burny without the depth of taste. Having said that you and your products are amazing!
Oh you are just so kind! Thanks so much for your love and support 🙂
Is this the recipe for the one sukhis has with samosas? or is it just a general recipe
It is a slightly different recipe, but just as yummy!
I can’t wait to try making this!! Is purées ginger just ginger thrown in the blender? Or do I add liquid or sea song to it?
Haha.. just ginger thrown in a blender! 🙂
Thanks!!
Thank you for the delicious recipe! How long will this last in the refrigerator? Freezer?
