Turmeric is the ancient and sacred spice of India. It is the dried rhizome of a herbaceous perennial tropical plant. The primary rhizomes which are rather round in shape are called bulbs while the thin long secondary rhizomes are fingers.

A number of varieties are available in the country and are known mostly by name of locality where they are cultivated. Some of the popular cultivars are Duggirala, Tekkurpet, Sugandham, Amalapuram, Erode local, Alleppey, Muvattupuzha, Lakadong.

Turmeric is used as a condiment, dye, drug and cosmetic in addition to its use in religious ceremonies.
